DETROIT – General Motors on Tuesday reported a 1.5% decline in first quarter U.S. vehicle sales compared to a year ago, as the overall auto industry normalizes after years of disruptions and volatile results. Retail sales to customers were up 6%, GM said. GM's sales are below expectations for the overall industry, which Cox Automotive forecast to be up 5.5% from a year earlier. Buick was the only GM brand to report a sales increase during the quarter, up 16.4% from a year earlier. GM reported sales of its full-size pickups totaled roughly 197,000 units, up 3.6% from a year earlier, during the first quarter – marking their best performance during that time since the first quarter of 2020.

GM has lost 34,176 vehicles of production since the start of the UAW strike, according to an estimate by Deutsche Bank. The UAW has struck two GM assembly plants in the United States and 18 parts distribution centers.

The walkout by workers came after Canadian union Unifor said GM was "stubbornly refusing" to match the contract the labor union reached with Ford Motor (F.N), which offered wage increases of up to 25% in Canada. The walkout adds to the headache faced by the automaker in the U.S. where it is racking up millions of dollars in losses per week due to the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike that started Sept. 15. GM has lost 34,176 vehicles of production since the start of the UAW strike, according to an estimate by Deutsche Bank. GM has laid off 2,300 U.S. workers due to the impacts of the UAW strike. At the Oshawa plant, workers build Chevrolet Silverado trucks, one of GM's most profitable models, while the plant's stamping operations supply various parts for GM North America.

GM has lost 34,176 vehicles of production since the start of the UAW strike in September, according to an estimate by Deutsche Bank. Unifor has used the "pattern bargaining" approach in its talks, reaching a deal first with Ford and then expecting GM and Stellantis to match. Unifor represents about 18,000 workers at the Canadian facilities of Ford, GM and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI).

A GMC pickup truck is displayed for sale on a lot at a General Motors dealership on January 05, 2023 in Austin, Texas. General Motors said Monday that its first-quarter U.S. sales rose 18% from a year ago, to just over 600,000 vehicles delivered, as it continued its rebound from the supply chain problems that limited global auto production in 2021 and early 2022. Most of those electric vehicles were Chevrolet Bolts, but GM did sell 968 of its brand-new Cadillac Lyriq EVs, built on the company's next-generation Ultium EV architecture. GM has been working to ramp up its production of its Ultium-based electric vehicles, with new high-volume Ultium-based models including an electric Chevrolet Equinox crossover due later in 2023. The company's EV sales volumes are expected to ramp up sharply from there in 2024 and 2025.
